      Waste for Development

W4D is a holistic project that blends artisanal renewable energy production with environmental sustainability, charity, agriculture and poverty alleviation. I am applying as an entrepreneur, but to some extent as a researcher as well because the project has a socio-economic and sustainable environment dimension. In this project, we rear a total of 5000 broilers (chicken) and 300 pigs, whose wastes and droppings are used to produce biogas which can be burned to produce heat, electricity, or both the anaerobically-digested manure. Our system typically consists of liquid manure handling equipment, a heated anaerobic digester, gas utilization equipment, safety equipment, and effluent storage and handling systems. After extracting methane gas (biogas), the slurry leftover is used to fertilize farms, it has proven to increase yields by 11%.
Innovation: What makes this project innovative is the fact that we use very local materials to produce biogas- tins, hand-made digesters, local pipes and car tubes. Another innovation is that for the first time ever we dry up slurry and parcel them in bio-non-degradable bags which can be stored for long and used at any time.
Charity: With this project, we offer the biogas for FREE in orphanages, refugees and underprivileged.
Agriculture: We use our slurry in a 5 hectares farmland and offer the rest to poor farmers, just to remind us that 79% of Cameroonians lives on agriculture.
Outreach: This project is implemented by poor indigenous farmers, in 21 localities, summing up to about 300000 inhabitants in total.
Profit: This project permits us to sell the chickens, pigs and farm yields. After 3 months.
This forum will be an opportunity to network, as well as create an enabling environment to network with other youths and researchers.
